Walking Photography Highlights For 2024 – Don’t Miss Out!

Walking Photography Highlights For 2024 – Don’t Miss Out!

I’m not sure how this happened, but 2023 has already come to an end. Another year has flown by, and that’s why I’ve been busy planning what’s coming up in 2024.

I’ve put together a programme of photo walks, workshops and more to inspire you to get out and make the most of your camera this year.

Here are some of the highlights you can expect for 2024 and don’t forget to check out the events calendar to find out what else I have planned

So, here we go, let’s take a trip forwards in time, picking one event per month to showcase. If I’m being honest, it took a long time to narrow it down to just one!

What’s Coming Up in 2024?

January

There are few things more magical than spotting an owl in the wild. These magical beasts are a sight to behold and I will be taking you out around the habitats of at least three species during the Talk and Walk on Friday 12th January.

Barn owl from Walks with Nature

We’ll meet at my studio in Burley-in-Wharfedale from 1:30pm till 4:30pm and I will share fieldcraft tips and techniques for responsibly and ethically seeking out owls behaving naturally in their own environment.

February

Saltaire is one of West Yorkshire’s gems. This UNESCO World Heritage site is full of gorgeous Yorkshire stone terraces, as well as the imposing and iconic mill at the heart of the village.

Salt's Mill

When the lights come on at night, we get a great opportunity to capture some enticing images and this Night Photo Walk is ideal if you want to learn tips and techniques to improve your photography under the starry sky. We’ll look at both the creative and the technical side of night photography as we explore the streets of Saltaire on Monday 19th February from 6:30pm.

March

For many people, seeing otters in their habitat is the pinnacle of their wildlife adventures. It’s not always easy, of course, but that is what makes it so exciting when you catch a glimpse!

Otter

I will take you to some of my favourite otter haunts, offering advice on where to spot these enigmatic creatures and how to do so in a way that doesn’t disturb them as they go about their day.

This Talk and Walk is on Sunday 24th March, from 12:30pm till 6:30pm.

April

During springtime, it’s a joy to get out and experience one of the busiest times of the year for British wildlife. The River and Moor Tour is an all-day event, taking in some of the most diverse and rich habitats around Ilkley.

River and moor

There are some truly exciting opportunities to spot kingfisher, dipper, heron, goosander and oystercatcher by the river, with the possibility of seeing grebes, warblers, kestrels, bittern swallows, swifts and so many others on the moor.

It takes place on Saturday 20th April, from 8am till 4pm and I will be on hand to share responsible and positive ways to watch and experience nature.

May

May brings bluebell season and, with that, the chance to get some great shots of nature’s beauty. This Seasonal Photo Walk takes in two unmanicured woodlands in Ilkley, providing two very different experiences.

Bluebells Ilkley

Every turn you take during this walk reveals a new perspective and I will be there to help you capture the sights you see in all their glory.

If you want to do the bluebells justice with your images, book in to join me on Sunday 5th May, from 9:30am to 12pm.

June

If you have never been to Bempton on the Yorkshire coast in June, you need to rectify that by joining me for the Golden Hour Photo Walk, the Bempton’s Secrets Photo Walk...or both!

On Saturday evening, I will lead you around my favourite sites to capture the plethora of puffins, gannets and more at this most stunning time of the day, with the possibility of catching a glimpse at the early evening visitors, like barn owls, that breed here.

Bempton Cliffs Puffin hovering in the breeze

On Sunday, we head out early to explore further and longer on these iconic clifftops, taking advantage of the quiet before everyone else arrives. I’ll share the inside scoop on the best places to capture photographs of the wildlife all around, providing tips on the best techniques to make the most of your photography.

The Golden Hour Photo Walk runs from 6pm to 9pm on Saturday 8th June, with the Bempton’s Secrets Walk starting at 8am on Sunday 9th, finishing at 4pm.

July

There are very few better places to be in the summer than out in the Yorkshire Dales. Especially Malham. And you can combine a stroll in one of the most beautiful spots in the country with the chance to learn practical tips to improve your photography skills.

Malham

We will take in the iconic Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar and the limestone pavement above the world famous Malham Cove, and I will provide general advice to help the whole group, as well as sharing specific guidance for individuals.

We meet at 9am on Sunday 14th July, finishing at 1:30pm, having taken in the rugged countryside that inspired everyone from J W Turner to Harry Potter at a leisurely pace.
